Mount Carmel Shiksha Kendra

Twelve years later, in August, 2002 Mount Carmel School at Dwarka opened its doors and heart to the poorest of the children from the slums near Dwarka.

23 children from the slums of Goyla Dairy and Qutab Vihar were the first to be enrolled. Teachers camped during the day at the slum cluster for two months trying to convince parents to send their children to school. The children were excited. Their parents weren’t interested.

Day after day a teacher went with the bus to motivate both parents and children.  Gradually the children started coming, wearing soiled clothes, unkempt hair laden with lice, chewing tobacco and using abusive language, often sullen and unresponsive.

At school, the teachers made them brush their teeth and have a bath before starting lessons. Many children stopped coming because of this health & hygiene care. Each morning they would run away on seeing the bus.

It took many weeks for the children to respond positively. The persistent effort with incessant prayers did not go in vain. Children started coming regularly. Day by day, their number increased. Thus the foundation was laid.

Mount Carmel Shiksha Kendra Today

Today we have a dedicated team of 8 teachers and 250 children in MCSK.  These very special children have not only filled our classrooms but also our hearts with renewed faith, strength, gratitude and love.
